Costa Maya

Costa Maya, Mexico. First stop on the cruise.

We took ATVs around the island.

All of Costa Maya has this broken tree brush everywhere and all of the island is super flat.

Taking a little break on the beach from the ATV.

When I saw this I was like oil spill?? But no, apparently, they grow mangos and the mango farms turn the water this gross brown.

Your pictures are beautiful. I would like to make a couple of comments. 1st, Costa Maya is not an island. I think they may imply that on the cruise ship. It is a peninsula and we are 4.5 hours south of Cancun and if you stopped in Cozumel, we are 3.5 hours south of there. 2nd the red in the water is from a Mangrove, which is a protected tree that is great for the planet. It does for the oceans what the forests do for our air. When there is a lot of rain, the Mangroves leach tannins into the water that stain the water reddish. It is healthy and not bad, but the color can be a little disconcerting. Lastly, I would like to know where you went on your ATV tour. Did they take you along the beach? You seem like a very environmentally aware person and there are some ATV tours that are riding on the beach and destroying Turtle nests. I don’t want to put blame on good companies, only those that are driving on the beaches. Thank you for your help in letting me know and also if the tour did drive on the beach, if you could tell me the name of the tour company. I belong to a turtle protection group and we keep seeing the tracks on the beach of the tours, but never see them in action. Thank you so much for your help. Please email at the email address above.

Those first two photos should be in a magazine or in an ad or really huge on a wall somewhere, what a great contrast.
